Synchronizing Servers for Cutover

After you have successfully migrated a server workload, you should periodically sync the migrated server with the source server. By regularly syncing the migrated server with the source server, you minimize the maintenance window needed when you cutover to the migrated server.

Understanding DynaCenter Syncing

Syncs reduce the data change set between the source and target servers in preparation for the cutover sync. The frequency with which you sync servers should be defined by the volatility of the data on the server—servers with volatile data should be synchronized more frequently; however, it is recommended that you sync at least once each day. For these sync operations, DynaCenter quiesces services on the target server only.

There are two places where you can define a sync schedule:

  • In the Sync tab of the template associated with the source server — using this option, DynaCenter will start the first sync immediately after the migration completes and then run subsequent syncs at 24-hour intervals after the start of the first sync
  • In the Server Cutover view, accessed from the Schedule Server Cutover button — using this option, you can define a custom sync schedule that is run one time or on a recurring basis. This topic includes instructions on how to define a custom sync schedule.

Note: If you define a custom sync schedule, the custom schedule overrides the Sync Servers setting in the Sync Tab of the template.

Understanding DynaCenter Cutover

Run the cutover sync when you are ready to cutover to the migrated server and decommission the source server. During the cutover sync DynaCenter quiesces services on both the source and the target servers. By quiescing both the source and target servers before the sync operation, you help to ensure that the synchronized data on the target server is consistent with the source server before the cutover.

Define a cutover schedule in the Server Cutover view, accessed from the Schedule Server Cutover button . This topic includes instructions on how to define a cutover schedule.

Prerequisites

Before DynaCenter can run a sync, the following must be true:

  • The server workload must have been successfully migrated. DynaCenter cannot initiate a sync if the server migration is still in progress, or if the server migration did not complete successfully.
  • Both the source server and the target server must be online
  • The source server must not be part of an ongoing migration or sync operation

Procedure

  1. In the Migrations management page, select the server(s) that you want to create a sync schedule for.

Note: You can select servers in any of the following ways:

    • To select servers from multiple waves, expand the waves and use Ctrl + click or Cmd + click to select each server
    • To select all servers within a wave, click the wave name
  2. Click the Schedule Server Cutover button DynaCenter Console Sync Servers button .
  3. In the Server Cutover view, select Schedule syncs for cutover preparation.
  4. In the Beginning list, specify when syncing should start:
    OptionDescription
    As soon as possible

Starts syncing the servers as soon as the source server is not in use in another operation; if the server is already not in use, the sync will begin immediately

AtStarts syncing the servers at the specified date and time in the specified timezone
  5. In the Occurring list, specify how often syncs should be run:
    OptionDescription
    OnceRuns a single sync
ContinuouslyRuns another sync immediately after the preceding sync completes
Every <x> hoursRuns another sync the specified number of hours after the start time of the preceding sync
Every dayRuns another sync at the same time each day
  6. In the Ending list, specify when the sync schedule should end:
    OptionDescription
    At cutover

Runs the sync schedule until the cutover schedule begins

AfterRuns the sync schedule the selected number of times
AtRuns the sync schedule until the specified date and time in the specified timezone
  7. If you do not want to schedule the cutover sync at this time, go to Step 10, otherwise select Schedule the cutover.
  8. In the Beginning list, specify when the cutover sync should start:
    OptionDescription
    As soon as possible

Starts the cutover sync as soon as the source server is not in use in another operation; if the server is already not in use, the cutover sync will begin immediately

AtStarts the cutover sync at the specified date and time in the specified timezone
  9. If you set the date and time for the cutover sync to begin, specify what should happen if the server is in use in another operation at that time:

    Option Description
Still perform operation Perform the cutover sync as soon as the server is no longer in use in another operation
    Cancel operation

Do not perform the cutover sync

Important: You will need to reschedule the cutover sync.

    <x> hours, cancel operation

Perform the cutover sync unless the schedule is delayed beyond the delay specified in the selection

Important: You will need to reschedule the cutover sync.

  10. Click Yes to save the schedule.

DynaCenter will begin syncing your servers based on the schedule you defined.
